CENTRE – The National Weather Service in Birmingham has issued a Heat Advisory for Cherokee County and much of central Alabama. The advisory will remain in effect from 11 a.m. Wednesday until 8 p.m. Saturday.

Heat index values could reach 107 degrees during the four-day period. Forecasters warn that hot temperatures and high humidity could cause heat-related illnesses.

The advisory includes Cherokee, Etowah, Calhoun, and Cleburne counties. Centre, Gadsden, Anniston, and Heflin are among the communities covered by the alert.

The extended advisory follows another period of dangerous heat across northeast Alabama in August.

Residents Urged to Limit Heat Exposure

The National Weather Service advises residents to drink plenty of fluids and remain in air-conditioned locations when possible. People should also avoid direct sunlight and check on relatives and neighbors.

Anyone working or spending time outside should take additional precautions. Forecasters recommend moving strenuous activities to the early morning or evening.

Residents should wear lightweight, loose-fitting clothing and drink plenty of water. They should also learn the symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke.

Young children and pets should never remain unattended inside a vehicle. Temperatures can quickly climb to deadly levels, even during a brief stop.

Outdoor Workers Face Increased Risk

Outdoor workers should take frequent breaks in shaded or air-conditioned areas. Employers should consider adjusting work schedules to reduce exposure during the hottest part of the day.

Move anyone overcome by heat to a cool, shaded location immediately. Heat stroke is a medical emergency, and anyone showing symptoms should receive immediate help by calling 911.
