Residents across Cherokee County have reported more black bear and timber rattlesnake sightings in recent days. Alabama wildlife officials say late summer brings increased movement for both animals.

Young bears are leaving their mothers to find territory, while adult males travel farther in search of food and mates. Timber rattlesnakes are also active as they feed and enter their late-summer mating period.

Officials say the animals may not be more numerous; people may simply be seeing more of their normal seasonal movement. If you encounter either one, keep your distance. Never approach or feed a bear, and do not try to handle a rattlesnake.
