ROME– Open Sky Drone Light Shows will fill the sky above downtown Rome with synchronized drones Monday night during a free celebration of America’s 250th anniversary.
The show will begin at 9 p.m. Aug. 17 at Town Green. The event is free and open to residents, visitors, families, and Georgia Downtown Conference attendees.
Organizers say the drones will create patriotic images, animations, and other formations synchronized with a musical soundtrack.
Guests should bring blankets or lawn chairs for seating on the lawn.
Music and Downtown Activities Begin Before Show
DJ Todd Williams will provide live music from 7 to 9 p.m. before the drones take flight.
Organizers encourage visitors to arrive early for downtown dining, shopping, and Sip & Stroll. An outdoor bar at The Forum River Center will sell beverages throughout the event.
The Georgia’s Rome Office of Tourism is helping promote the show as part of Rome’s America 250 celebration. The city has hosted several patriotic programs and community activities throughout the year.
Monday’s event also coincides with the opening of the 2026 Georgia Downtown Conference, which runs through Aug. 20 in Rome.
The annual conference is expected to bring more than 250 downtown-development professionals from across Georgia to the city. Participants will attend educational sessions, workshops, tours, and an awards ceremony recognizing downtown achievements.
Company Combines Technology and Aerial Art
Open Sky Productions says it was founded in 2010 and is based in Salt Lake City, Utah. The company creates customized drone performances for community celebrations, festivals, corporate events, and other gatherings nationwide.
During a drone show, each aircraft serves as a programmable point of light. Flight-control software directs the drones as they move into formations and change colors together.
The company says its typical shows use 200 to 500 purpose-built drones, although the number varies by location and production. Organizers have not announced how many drones will appear in Rome.
Open Sky says its pilots hold Federal Aviation Administration certifications. The company also conducts site evaluations and coordinates required airspace approvals before each performance.
Unlike fireworks, drone shows use reusable aircraft equipped with LED lights. The technology allows designers to create moving images, words, and animations without producing fireworks debris or explosive noise.
The Rome performance will celebrate innovation, community, and the nation’s 250th anniversary through images displayed across the night sky.
