SYLVANIA — The Town of Sylvania will receive a $20,000 federal grant to replace the Police Department’s outdated radio system.
The Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs announced the award July 27. The U.S. Department of Justice made the federal funding available, while ADECA will administer the grant.
Equipment Details and Timeline Remain Unannounced
ADECA’s announcement does not identify the equipment Sylvania plans to purchase. It also does not specify how many radios the department will replace.
The notice does not say whether the project includes portable radios, vehicle radios, dispatch equipment or other communications infrastructure. A vendor and expected installation date also remain unannounced.
The town’s website identifies Jeremy Ake as police chief. The department operates from the Sylvania Municipal Complex on Sylvania Avenue South.
Part of a Four-Agency Grant Package
Gov. Kay Ivey awarded just over $176,000 through the latest equipment grant package. Four state and local law enforcement agencies will share the funding.
The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency received $69,816 for protective and surveillance equipment. Officers serving with the Metro Area Crime Suppression Unit in Montgomery County will use that equipment.
Pell City received $61,307 for technology that can unlock phones during investigations. The upgrade will allow investigators to process devices locally instead of relying on outside laboratories.
The Clay County Commission received $25,000. The Clay County Sheriff’s Department will replace the touchscreen system that monitors and operates doors at the county jail.
Second Recent Equipment Grant for Sylvania Police
The new grant follows a separate equipment award for Sylvania Police in 2025.
ADECA announced a $41,095 grant in April 2025. That funding supported the purchase of firearms, bulletproof vests and radios.
Together, the two awards total $61,095 in federal equipment funding for the department since April 2025. That total includes equipment other than radios.
