At the August 4th meeting, the Piedmont City Council solidified positions in municipal court, hiring Jesse Moses as prosecutor and keeping Richard Couch as the public defender and Brent Morrison as judge. The group also approved a motion to increase the public defender and prosecutor’s pay from $600 to $800 per month.
In other actions the council awarded Basic Administrations Solutions a 12-month grant-writing contract, and the group finalized the city’s first purchase of a new patrol vehicle since 2023.
The council failed to act on several agenda items. They did not approve $15,219 in of retiree bonuses and tabled a proposed contract with Comcast to gather more information. Also, the council delayed a Personnel Handbook update regarding comp and personal time until the next meeting.
In his closing comments Mayor Farmer stated that Saturday’s murder-mystery fundraiser at the museum included many out-of-towners and raised a good amount of money for the Historical Society. The benefit for the next quarter will be October 30th at Shell’s Downtown Restaurant. The 80’s-themed event will raise money for Venecia’s Foundation, a cancer support group.
