GADSDEN– A new transfer agreement between Gadsden State Community College and Jacksonville State University will create a direct route from technical associate degrees to a bachelor’s degree.
The agreement applies to graduates of 28 Associate of Applied Science programs at Gadsden State. Eligible graduates can transfer into Jax State’s Bachelor of Arts in Integrated Studies program.
Under the new pathway, students may transfer applicable general education courses and technical specialty credits. Each student’s transcript will receive an individual evaluation to maximize the number of transferable credits.
The partnership is intended to reduce duplicated coursework and shorten the path toward completing a bachelor’s degree.
“Jax State and Gadsden State share a commitment to creating opportunities for students, and this partnership expands those opportunities,” Jax State President Dr. Don C. Killingsworth Jr. said.
“Together, we have created what we believe is a first-of-its-kind pathway in Alabama, ensuring that every eligible Gadsden State graduate, regardless of their field of study, has a seamless pathway to continue their education and earn a bachelor’s degree at Jax State,” Killingsworth added. “That’s a win for students, our institutions and the workforce needs of our region.”
Pathway Covers High-Demand Workforce Programs
The agreement includes technical programs in healthcare, engineering technologies, manufacturing, business, public service, information technology, and other workforce fields.
Eligible programs include emergency medical services, industrial automation, mechatronics, radiography, child development, computer science technology, and precision machining.
Students will also receive credit for applicable general education courses through Alabama Transfers. That statewide program helps students understand course equivalencies and degree requirements when transferring between Alabama public colleges and universities.
Meanwhile, both institutions will work together to inform students about the new pathway. They will also coordinate outreach efforts for the participating academic programs.
“At Gadsden State, we are committed to creating opportunities that help our students keep moving forward,” Gadsden State President Alan Smith said.
Smith noted that many students begin successful careers after earning an Associate of Applied Science degree. Others immediately continue their education or return to college later in their careers.
“This pathway agreement supports both by creating a clear route to a bachelor’s degree, whether students transfer immediately or decide to return to college later in their careers,” Smith said.
“By recognizing the value of their career technical education and awarding credit for their completed degree, this partnership streamlines the path to a bachelor’s,” he added. “Together, we are expanding opportunities for our students while strengthening the workforce and the communities we serve.”
The agreement reflects both institutions’ efforts to expand affordable educational opportunities and support Alabama’s workforce.
