PIEDMONT-The Piedmont Police Department is offering vehicle window decals designed to alert first responders that a person with autism may be inside.
The “Autistic Occupant” decals are part of the department’s Autism Safety Initiative. They provide immediate notice to police officers, firefighters, emergency medical personnel and other first responders.
Police say the decals can help responders recognize that an occupant may have sensory sensitivities or communication differences. Some individuals may also react differently during stressful or emergency situations.
The department hopes the program will help create safer and more positive interactions. The decals allow first responders to approach situations with greater patience, awareness and understanding.
Residents interested in receiving a decal may visit the Piedmont Police Department. The department asks caregivers to provide documentation verifying an autism diagnosis.
Families may also bring their family member with autism to meet officers at the department. Police say those visits offer an opportunity to build relationships in a calm and welcoming setting before an emergency occurs.
The department said the initiative is part of its commitment to making Piedmont safer and more inclusive for all residents.
