The Rome-Floyd Fire Department relays that about ten thousand people every year are treated for injuries due to mishandling of fireworks. In a recent statement the agency reminds citizens that the safest way to view fireworks is to go to a public display…but if you must shoot them off, they have provided some tips to keep celebrations fun and fire-free.
Buy only legal, licensed fireworks.
Always have an adult in charge, even with sparklers. Never allow children to play with or ignite fireworks.
Wet the area in which you are shooting fireworks to prevent grass fires. Keep a bucket of water or hose nearby for emergencies. Place used sparkles and firework remnants into the bucket of water.
Light one firework at a time and never relight a dud.
Maintain a safe distance once fireworks are lit.
Never point fireworks at people, pets, or buildings.
What goes up must come down, so don’t shoot celebratory shots in the air.
