Two Centre All-Star youth baseball teams recently qualified for the United States Specialty Sports Association World Series in Baton Rouge, La.

After falling just short of their regional championship game, the Centre 8U All-Stars opened state tournament pool play with wins over Moody 8U (17-6) and Chelsea 8U (11-3) in Rainbow City.

In their bracket play opener at the Fort McClellan Complex in Anniston, Centre 8U defeated Northport 8U 7-3. Then against Central Alabama 8U in Irondale, Centre 8U was down two runs in the bottom half of the final inning. They put together a couple of hits, and then with one out, a runner on second and down a run, Jett Helms delivered a walk-off homer to win the game 7-6 and clinch their World Series spot.

Centre 8U’s run at a championship ended with a 14-3 loss to eventual Gold bracket champion Phenix City 8U-East.

In their state tournament pool play, the Centre 10U All-Stars rebounded from a 12-5 setback to Grant 10U in Lincoln to tie Millbrook 10U at 7 at Choccolocco Park in Oxford.

Centre 10U went on to hold off Midfield 10U 7-6, beat Irondale 10U 14-3, and then dropped a 3-2 decision to Taylorville 10U to finish runner-up in the Silver Bracket Championship.

The USSSA World Series begins July 9 and continues through July 13.
