Ballplay-Bend Fire Department Reminds Residents of Burn Permit Requirements in Etowah County

BALLPLAY — The Ballplay-Bend Fire Department is reminding Etowah County residents about current burn permit requirements and regulations as wildfire season concerns continue throughout the region.

According to the department, the Alabama Department of Environmental Management (ADEM) prohibits most outdoor burning each year from May 1 through October 31. During that period, small campfires are permitted; however, any other outdoor burning must receive approval from ADEM and must be conducted for agricultural or silvicultural purposes.

The department also notes that permits issued through the Alabama Forestry Commission may be required year-round. Any burn covering an area larger than one-quarter acre requires a forestry permit before the fire is started.

Fire officials emphasize that all outdoor burning, including burns conducted under an approved permit, remains subject to current weather conditions. Residents are reminded that obtaining a permit does not eliminate liability, and individuals conducting burns are responsible for any damage resulting from escaped fires.

In addition, residents living within municipal limits should be aware that local ordinances may require additional permits or approvals beyond those issued by state agencies. Fire officials encourage residents to contact their city government to determine whether additional requirements apply.

The Ballplay-Bend Fire Department urges residents to exercise caution when conducting any outdoor burning and to ensure all necessary permits have been obtained before igniting a fire.

For more information regarding burn regulations and permit requirements, residents may contact the Alabama Department of Environmental Management, the Alabama Forestry Commission, or their local fire department.
