Sheriff Shaver Offers Home Security Tips for Summer Travelers

CHEROKEE COUNTY — As summer vacation season gets underway, Cherokee County Sheriff Jeff Shaver is encouraging residents to take a few precautionary measures before leaving home to help protect their property while traveling.

In a message to the community, Sheriff Shaver emphasized that simple preparations can help reduce the risk of problems while families are away.

“Please lock all doors and windows. Put lights on timers if possible. Avoid posting travel plans in real time on social media. Ask a trusted neighbor to check on your property. Stop mail or package deliveries if you’re gone for several days. A little preparation can go a long way in helping keep your home secure while you’re away,” Sheriff Shaver said.

The sheriff’s recommendations focus on making homes appear occupied and limiting information that could alert potential criminals to a homeowner’s absence.

Posting vacation updates on social media while away, Sheriff Shaver noted, can unintentionally inform others that a residence is unoccupied. Likewise, accumulated mail, packages, or newspapers can signal that no one is home.

The Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office encourages residents to make security preparations part of their travel plans and to remain mindful of their property before departing for extended periods.

Sheriff Shaver concluded by wishing residents a safe and enjoyable summer travel season.
