CENTRE — The Cherokee County Coroner’s Office has identified the woman killed in a shooting-related incident earlier this week in the Woods Bend community near Centre.

Cherokee County Coroner Paul McDonald confirmed to WEIS Radio that the victim was 42-year-old Misty Ann Thomason of Rome.

The incident occurred early Tuesday morning, May 26, and remains under investigation by authorities.

According to initial reports, emergency responders were dispatched at approximately 5:30 a.m. after receiving a call reporting that a female had suffered a gunshot wound.

The Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office, Mt. Wisner Fire Department, and Atrium Floyd EMS responded to the scene in the Woods Bend community. Upon arrival, first responders immediately began lifesaving measures in an effort to save the victim.

Authorities also requested a medical helicopter to transport the victim; however, weather conditions prevented the aircraft from responding.

Despite emergency efforts, Thomason was pronounced dead at the scene. The Cherokee County Coroner’s Office was then called to assist with the investigation.

Investigators have not released details regarding the circumstances leading up to the shooting.
