CHEROKEE/ETOWAH/DEKALB COUNTIES — Incumbent Alabama State Senator Andrew Jones secured victory Tuesday evening, May 19, in the Republican Primary for Alabama State Senate District 10, defeating challenger Amy Dozier Minton in a closely watched race spanning Cherokee, Etowah, and portions of DeKalb County.
According to unofficial election results, which still must be certified, Jones carried all three counties within the district to earn the Republican nomination.
In Cherokee County, Jones received 1,754 votes, or 53.22 percent, while Minton earned 1,542 votes, or 46.78 percent.
In Etowah County, Jones narrowly edged Minton, receiving 5,246 votes, or 51 percent, compared to Minton’s 5,040 votes, or 49 percent.
Jones saw his largest margin of victory in the DeKalb County portion of the district, receiving 1,308 votes, or 70.59 percent, while Minton received 545 votes, or 29.41 percent.
Following the victory, Jones released a statement thanking supporters and reflecting on the campaign.
“Huge win tonight! Thank you, thank you, thank you for making me your Republican nominee for State Senate! We were honored to win ALL THREE COUNTIES!
To the Amy Minton supporters: I congratulate team Minton on a hard fought race and humbly ask to earn your vote and support on November 3rd.
To our supporters, volunteers, friends, and family: thank you so much for believing in us! It takes a team, and our team has been at it for over a year. The “Andrew and You” movement is alive and well, and we are grateful for each and every one of you.
A special thank you goes out to my wonderful wife Summer who has been the MVP during this election cycle. In addition to helping run the campaign and coordinating volunteers, sign spots, door knocking, and social media, Summer has been a great sounding board for me. She has also been a trooper during all of the negativity and attacks.
ALFA came at us with everything they had: dark money, attacks, and outright lies. The social media warriors tried to spread misinformation and encourage people to vote for the most beatable Republican in November. Local powerbrokers worked behind the scenes to tip the scales.
In the end, none of that mattered, because the PEOPLE had their say. The voters of District 10 know me and my values. I’m honored to be the people’s candidate, and honored to be the torch bearer for our conservative, Republican platform in November.
Now, the race is on for November 3rd. Let’s roll!”
Jones’ victory now potentially sets the stage for a November general election contest.
Jessie Battles, who was previously removed from the Republican primary ballot by the Alabama Republican Party, has submitted signatures to the Alabama Secretary of State’s Office in an effort to qualify as an independent candidate in the November election. Those signatures are currently undergoing the certification process to determine whether Battles will officially qualify for the ballot.
The District 10 Senate seat represents Cherokee County, portions of Etowah County, and parts of DeKalb County in northeast Alabama. The general election is scheduled for November 3.
