National Nurses Day Begins Week of Recognition for Healthcare Professionals

National Nurses Day is being observed Wednesday, May 6, marking the start of National Nurses Week, which runs through May 12 and concludes on the birthday of Florence Nightingale, widely regarded as the founder of modern nursing.

The annual observance is dedicated to recognizing the contributions, commitment, and daily service of nurses across the healthcare field. First formally established in 1982 when President Ronald Reagan signed a proclamation designating May 6 as National Recognition Day for nurses, the observance has since grown into a weeklong national tribute.

National Nurses Week highlights the essential role nurses play in patient care, public health, and emergency response, while also drawing attention to the demands and challenges faced by those in the profession.

Across the country, businesses and organizations often show appreciation through special offers and discounts for healthcare workers during the week, including food and retail promotions for those presenting valid identification.

However, officials and healthcare leaders emphasize that the true purpose of the week goes beyond promotions, focusing instead on gratitude for the skill, compassion, and dedication nurses provide every day in hospitals, clinics, long-term care facilities, and other medical settings.

From WEIS Radio, we extend a heartfelt thank you to all nurses throughout our listening area. Your commitment to caring for others, often in the most difficult moments, does not go unnoticed. We appreciate your service, your sacrifice, and the difference you make in countless lives every day.
