Centre Community Center to Be Renamed in Honor of Mary George Waite During Special Ceremony May 6

CENTRE- The City of Centre will host a renaming ceremony on May 6, 2026, to honor longtime educator and community leader Mary George Waite, recognizing her decades of service to the city and its residents.

The event will take place at 11 a.m. at the current City Hall and Community Center, which will officially be renamed the Mary George Waite Community Center.

A Centre native, Waite returned home after college to teach at Cherokee County High School and went on to dedicate her life to education and public service in the community. City officials say her contributions have left a lasting impact on generations of residents in Centre.

The ceremony will include special remarks from Alabama Governor Kay Ivey, along with participation from members of Waite’s family, local officials, and community members.

City leaders are encouraging the public to attend the event, which will celebrate Waite’s lifelong commitment to education and her enduring influence on the Centre community.
