Alabama Extension Week Celebrated in Cherokee County April 12–18

CHEROKEE COUNTY– This spring, the Cherokee County Extension Office is inviting the public to engage with its employees during Alabama Extension Week, which runs April 12th to 18th.

“When you walk in our office, you may be surprised at just how much knowledge you can gain,” said Cherokee County Extension Director Landon Marks. “When you have a question about farming, gardening, signing your child up for Alabama 4-H or providing healthy choices for your family, just remember that Extension does all that and more. Our experts can help you answer those questions. Plus, our publications and programs can help build upon your knowledge.”

To celebrate Alabama Extension Week, the office is hosting the Chamber breakfast in May, where you will see agents and 4-H members.

“We’re looking forward to this event, and we hope it will inspire more folks to experience all that Alabama Extension has to offer.”

Additionally, the Cherokee County Master Gardeners are hosting their annual plant sales in April:

April 11th – 8:00 AM – 1:00 PM – Centre City Park

April 18th – 8:00 AM – 1:00 PM – Leesburg Park

Since 2023, Alabama Extension Week has been celebrated across Alabama. Activities started when Gov. Kay Ivey signed a proclamation that designated April 12-18 as Alabama Extension Week. Alabama Extension Director Eve Brantley and Interim 1890 Extension Administrator Majed Dweik joined the governor for the proclamation signing.

“Alabama Extension connects people with practical, research‑based solutions that make a difference in their lives,” Brantley said.

“Alabama Extension Week gives us an opportunity to shine a light on the incredible work happening every day through our agents, specialists, and county teams. They are out in their communities building relationships, answering questions, and helping families and producers put university research to work in meaningful ways. I hope residents will take this week to reach out, get to know their local Extension office, and discover all the ways we are here to support them.”

Every year, Alabama Extension staff coordinate more than 6,000 educational events in cities and towns across the state. That includes the work of Urban Extension, which operates out of nine urban centers in Alabama.

“Alabama Extension Week provides the Alabama Cooperative Extension System with an opportunity to highlight our programs, services, and dedicated staff serving people and communities statewide,” said Dweik, who also serves as vice president of research and economic development. “As a proud partner in Alabama Extension, Alabama A&M University Extension remains committed to transforming lives by sharing knowledge and helping residents and communities thrive as a result of the work we do.”

Additionally, Alabama Extension reaches more than 110,000 students through its youth leadership development program, Alabama 4-H.
