Cherokee County Deputy Helps Rescue Driver from Burning Vehicle After Crash

BIRMINGHAM — A Cherokee County Sheriff’s deputy currently attending the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Academy helped rescue a driver from a burning vehicle following a multi-vehicle crash last week on Interstate 65.
According to the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office, Deputy Catly Itson was leaving for the week to return home when the crash occurred on I-65 South, just north of downtown Birmingham.

Authorities said Itson was stopped in traffic when a vehicle failed to stop, causing a multi-vehicle collision. Moments later, one of the vehicles involved in the crash caught fire.
Without hesitation, Itson ran to assist those involved in the accident. She helped remove the driver from the burning vehicle and also assisted another individual from a separate vehicle involved in the crash.

Officials said Itson remained on the scene, checking on others and helping ensure their safety until Birmingham Police arrived. Authorities noted that officers arrived just before the vehicle became fully engulfed in flames.
Thanks to her quick actions, both individuals were able to escape safely.
The Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office praised Itson’s response, saying her actions reflected the character and commitment valued within the department.
