Victim Identified in Fatal Cherokee County Crash

Blue Pond — Authorities have identified the man who was killed in a two-vehicle crash Wednesday morning in Cherokee County.

According to the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA), the crash occurred at approximately 7:15 a.m. on Wednesday, April 1, on Alabama Highway 273 near Cherokee County Road 48, about four miles north of Leesburg.

Troopers said Marco Cortez-Gomez, 40, of Hanceville, was fatally injured when the 2010 Nissan Altima in which he was a passenger collided head-on with a 2024 Honda HR-V Sport. Cortez-Gomez was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Honda was driven by Katie G. Miller, 22, of Cedar Bluff. Miller and the driver of the Nissan, Benjamin Cortez-Gomez, 44, of Hanceville, were both injured in the crash and transported to Atrium Health Floyd Medical Center in Rome, Georgia, for treatment.

The crash remains under investigation by Troopers with ALEA’s Highway Patrol Division. No additional information has been released at this time.
