GADSDEN — The Gadsden Fire Department responded Wednesday afternoon to a report of an injured hiker in the Gorge area of Noccalula Falls Park and Campground, launching a coordinated rescue effort in one of the park’s most challenging areas.

Due to the steep terrain and limited access to the location, firefighters moved quickly to locate the patient and begin providing care. Engine 5 was the first unit to make contact with the injured hiker. Firefighters immediately rendered medical aid and stabilized the patient while additional responding units made their way into the area.

Several units responded to assist with the incident, including Rescue 1, Quint 4, Engine 1, Battalion 2, Fire Marshal 1, Fire Marshal 2, Training Officer 42, Fire Chief 42, and Advantage EMS Ambulance 1.

Officials said incidents in areas like the Gorge require a highly coordinated response because of the steep and remote environment. Patient access, packaging, and safe removal from such terrain can be difficult and require significant manpower. Technical high-angle and wilderness-style rescues also demand specialized training and a strong team approach to ensure both patient and responder safety.

The Gadsden Fire Department regularly conducts training for rope rescue operations, difficult terrain responses, and patient extrication scenarios. This training helps prepare crews for emergencies that occur in areas such as the Gorge, allowing firefighters to operate efficiently in high-risk environments while delivering prompt medical care and safely removing injured individuals.

WEIS Radio was able to attend one of those training sessions last year:

Thanks to the teamwork and training of all personnel involved, the patient was successfully extricated from the Gorge and transported by ambulance to a local hospital for further treatment.

The Gadsden Fire Department emphasized its continued commitment to serving the community around the clock, regardless of the location or complexity of the emergency.
