Man Surrenders After Three-Hour Standoff with Police in Tidmore Bend

GADSDEN — A man is in custody following a standoff with law enforcement Tuesday night in the Tidmore Bend community, according to the Gadsden Police Department.
Officers were dispatched around 7:15 p.m. to the area of Claire Street in reference to a domestic disturbance. When officers arrived on the scene, they began an investigation and determined that the suspect, later identified as Michael Christian Buchanan, had barricaded himself inside the residence and was displaying weapons toward responding officers.

Due to the elevated risk, the Etowah County Joint Special Operations Group (JSOG) was activated to assist.
Authorities said negotiators and tactical teams worked together for more than three hours in an effort to peacefully resolve the situation. During the standoff, tactical teams made a controlled adjustment to improve communication with Buchanan.
Shortly afterward, Buchanan surrendered without further incident.
Police said the resolution was the result of a coordinated and disciplined effort focused on protecting lives.
Officials also expressed appreciation for the agencies that make up the Etowah County Joint Special Operations Group, the county’s SWAT team, citing their professionalism, restraint, and commitment to public safety.
Buchanan is currently in custody pending charges. Authorities note that he is presumed innocent until proven guilty.
