Altoona Man Dies Following Multi-Vehicle Crash in Blount County

BLOUNT COUNTY — An Altoona man has died following a multi-vehicle crash that occurred Monday morning in Blount County, according to the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency.
The crash happened at approximately 8:23 a.m. on Monday, March 23, along Alabama Highway 75 near Rocky Mountain Road, about three miles north of Altoona.
Authorities said 62-year-old Paul G. Johnson of Altoona was critically injured when the 2019 Chevrolet Equinox he was driving was struck by a 2022 Lexus IS 350 driven by 36-year-old Joshua D. Hanson of Oneonta. Following the initial collision, Johnson’s vehicle was then struck by a 2015 Toyota Tundra driven by 28-year-old Edgar J. Barrios-Tello of Albertville.
Johnson was transported to the University of Alabama at Birmingham Hospital for treatment, where he later succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased.
Hanson was also injured in the crash and was airlifted to UAB Hospital for treatment.
Two children who were passengers in the Toyota Tundra — a 2-year-old and an 8-month-old — were also injured and transported to an area hospital for treatment.
The crash occurred on Alabama 75 near Rocky Mountain Road, approximately three miles north of Altoona.
Nothing further is available at this time as Troopers with the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency’s Highway Patrol Division continue to investigate the incident.
