MONTGOMERY, Ala.– Two East Alabama cities are set to become home to some of Alabama’s first medical cannabis dispensaries.
According to the Alabama Medical Cannabis Commission, dispensing sites approved to date will be located in nine Alabama municipalities, including Oxford and Talladega. The commission says three dispensary licenses were issued on January 8, 2026, authorizing those licensees to open their dispensing sites.

Commission information shows Callie’s Apothecary plans a location in Talladega, while RJK Holdings AL plans dispensaries in Oxford, Mobile, and Daphne. AMCC lists Oxford and Talladega among the currently approved dispensing municipalities, and RJK’s website identifies Oxford, Mobile, and Daphne as its planned locations.
A Montgomery location tied to Callie’s Apothecary is already being prepared and is widely expected to be the first place in Alabama where patients will be able to purchase legal medical cannabis. Industry reporting in early March said products could begin reaching dispensary shelves within roughly two months, though the AMCC says the exact date products will be available remains uncertain.
The Oxford dispensary could open as early as this summer, as Alabama’s medical cannabis system continues moving forward nearly five years after Gov. Kay Ivey signed the enabling law in 2021.

Under Alabama rules, dispensaries will be limited to certain medical cannabis products, including tablets, capsules, tinctures, topical gels, oils and creams, suppositories, transdermal patches, nebulizers, and liquids or oils for use in an inhaler. The state does not allow the sale of raw plant material, smoked or vaped products, or food items such as cookies or candies.

Patients must meet Alabama eligibility requirements, including having a qualifying medical condition, being registered in the state system, and receiving a recommendation from an Alabama physician certified by the Alabama Board of Medical Examiners.
One note: while some reports mention 12 dispensaries statewide if all applications are approved, the AMCC currently lists nine municipalities for dispensing sites tied to licenses issued so far, with more possible later depending on stayed or future licenses.
