Centre City Council Meeting (Tue 03/10/2026)

Centre, Ala.– The Centre City Council met Tuesday, March 10, at 5 p.m., with Mayor Pro Tempore Karen Yarbrough Slupe presiding in the absence of Mayor Jay Howell. Howell is in Washington, D.C., attending meetings with the East Alabama Regional Planning and Development Commission and visiting Alabama’s congressional delegation on Capitol Hill.

The meeting opened with a prayer led by Beau Hood before council members moved through several items of city business.

The council first approved the city’s accounts payable.

Members then approved a request from Summit Sanctuary, a 501(c)(3) organization, to use J.W. Hampton Field on April 25 for its annual fundraising event.

Council members also approved an alcohol license for Jaward LLC, doing business as Food Mart No. 12 at 902 West Main Street, allowing the business to sell retail beer and wine for off-premises consumption.

In another vote, the council unanimously reappointed Beau Hood to the Hatcher Community Center Committee for a two-year term.

The council also approved a series of measures related to a city-owned building at 590 East Main Street. Members voted to suspend the rules for immediate consideration of an ordinance declaring the property surplus and authorizing the mayor to enter into a lease agreement with ProHealth of Northeast Alabama. The council then approved the ordinance and renewed the lease agreement with ProHealth for an additional three years.

Additional approvals included purchasing Christmas garland decorations for Main Street light poles from Dixie Decorations for $5,108.40 and replacing three toilets at the fire station through Coheely Plumbing at a cost of $1,585.68.

Council members also approved the purchase of six desktop computers and two laptops for city offices, along with Microsoft software and installation services, for a total cost of $9,422.70.

The council voted to cover $2,640 in lodging expenses for the local 8-and-under girls basketball team as they travel to compete in a state tournament.

In preparation for seasonal cleanup, the council approved a Spring Cleanup Week scheduled for March 30 through April 3 and authorized advertising for the event.

Before adjourning, council members congratulated several individuals on recent accomplishments. Robert Pace was recognized for earning his EMT license, and Sherry Spears was acknowledged for achieving EMT Advanced certification. The council also welcomed Haley Sterling as the city’s new court clerk.

Members also congratulated the local 8-and-under girls basketball team for qualifying for the state tournament and thanked city employees and department heads for their continued work.

The meeting concluded with discussion of upcoming community events, including the city’s Art in the Park event, which organizers said has already added additional vendors.
