Rome Counselor Charged With Sexual Extortion, Forgery

ROME, Ga.– A Rome man known locally for his work advocating for children was jailed last week on numerous felony charges including sexual extortion, forgery and making false statements.

According to officials, Scott Alan Sherwin, 64, of Rome, was taken into custody at his home after warrants were issued in Bartow County.

Sherwin was charged with 15 counts of sexual extortion, 15 counts of forgery, and false statements and writings, according to law enforcement.

Sherwin served as a counselor and behavior analyst at an office located on Douglas Street.

According to Sherwin’s LinkedIn page, he was affiliated with Advocates for Children, an organization that provides services to children and families who have experienced abuse or neglect across 11 counties in Northwest Georgia.

The organization released a statement acknowledging the law enforcement investigation involving a former employee.

“Advocates for Children is aware of an active law enforcement investigation involving a former employee,” the statement said. “On February 26, 2026, Advocates for Children was notified by local authorities that a senior leadership team member was under investigation for activities related to work performed outside his role with our organization, including external contracts with other agencies and matters that occurred prior to his employment with Advocates.”

The organization said additional concerns involved violations of internal policies and ethical standards during his time with the organization.

“Upon receiving this information, the employee was immediately terminated, and all access to organizational facilities, systems, and programs was removed,” the statement continued. “We are cooperating fully with law enforcement and remain committed to transparency.”

Advocates for Children also stated it has no information indicating that any child in the care or custody of the organization was harmed.

The investigation remains ongoing.
