Severe Weather Awareness Event Planned at Cherokee Rural Health Clinic

CENTRE — Residents will have an opportunity to prepare for the upcoming severe weather season during a Severe Weather Awareness Event scheduled for Friday, March 13.
Atrium Health Floyd Cherokee Rural Health Clinic, in partnership with the Cherokee County Emergency Management Agency, will host the event from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the lobby of the Cherokee Rural Health Clinic located at 395 Northwood Drive in Centre.
During the event, Cherokee County EMA personnel will be on site to program NOAA Weather Radios so they are properly set to receive emergency alerts for the local area. Residents who already own a weather radio are encouraged to bring their devices and have them programmed as well.
Officials also announced that 50 free weather radios will be available on a first-come, first-served basis for Cherokee County residents.
Cherokee County EMA maintains a Weather Radio Registry for all radios that are distributed. The registry helps the agency account for the devices and confirm residency within Cherokee County. Anyone receiving a weather radio will be asked to provide a valid form of identification.
In addition to programming radios, EMA staff will also assist residents with signing up for severe weather and emergency alert notifications. Those who have already registered for alerts can have their information reviewed to ensure it is up-to-date.
Emergency management officials say the event is designed to help residents stay informed and prepared as the spring severe weather season approaches.
