According to the sheriff’s office, the devices will be placed throughout the Etowah County Jail, Courthouse and Judicial Building. Patrol deputies and members of the Emergency Services Unit will also be equipped with the devices for use in the field.

LifeVac devices are designed to assist in choking emergencies by providing a non-invasive suction method to help clear airway obstructions when traditional methods are unsuccessful. Officials say the addition offers another potentially lifesaving tool when responding to medical emergencies.

Sheriff Jonathon Horton said the move reflects the department’s responsibility to be prepared for a wide range of situations.
“We have to be prepared for numerous different situations,” Horton said. “Whether a crime is being committed or someone is in need of medical assistance, we’re often some of the first to arrive on scene. As Sheriff, my goal is to give you the peace of mind that our deputies are well-trained and equipped to help you in your time of need.”
The sheriff’s office stated that the deployment of the devices is part of its ongoing commitment to public safety and service throughout Etowah County.
