PIEDMONT, Ala.– The Piedmont City Council approved several resolutions addressing unsafe structures and routine city business during its meeting Tuesday night.
Council members first approved payment of city bills totaling $708,745.97, along with $149,488 in payroll for the previous two-week period.
The council also voted to reappoint Max Singleton to the Piedmont Housing Authority Board, extending his service as his term was set to expire at the end of March.
One item related to the Piedmont Healthcare Authority was tabled for further research before council members take action at a future meeting.
Several resolutions aimed at addressing unsafe housing and structures were approved during the meeting. The resolutions authorize the city to remove dangerous buildings and place liens on the properties to recover demolition costs. One of the approved actions involves a structure located at 6656 Old Piedmont–Gadsden Highway. The others are at 307 S. Harris Avenue and 203 Old Ladiga Road.
City officials also reported that two additional demolition contracts were signed this week, including a structure at the corner of Calhoun and Center Avenue. Work on those properties is expected to begin once utilities are disconnected.
During council discussion, members emphasized the importance of cleaning up blighted properties and improving the appearance of the community.
In another discussion, a local HVAC contractor briefed the council about equipment at city facilities, including systems serving the fire station. Officials asked for a formal quote and recommendations for any needed repairs or replacements.
Before adjourning, the city announced it will soon accept bids for grass cutting services for city properties, including cemeteries, parks and trails. Officials said bids will be accepted soon so work can begin as the mowing season approaches.
