- OXFORD, AL — The Oxford Police Department has confirmed and update that one individual was injured following a confrontation involving firearms earlier today inside Quintard Mall during a sneaker release event.
According to authorities, two adult males were inside the mall for the highly anticipated sneaker release when a confrontation occurred in front of a store. During the dispute, both individuals brandished firearms.
Initial reports indicated that no one had been struck. However, officials have since confirmed that one of the individuals involved sustained a single gunshot wound to the arm. The injured individual transported himself to a local hospital for treatment. Police stated the injury is not life-threatening.
The individual or individuals involved left the scene before officers arrived.
Law enforcement responded quickly to the report of a shot fired inside the mall and secured the area. Officers remained on site processing evidence and working to identify and locate those responsible. Authorities have confirmed there is no ongoing threat to the public at this time, though an increased police presence remained at the mall as a precaution.
The investigation remains ongoing, and officials stated that warrants will be sought as the case progresses.
In a statement regarding the incident, authorities described the reckless decision to introduce firearms into a crowded retail environment over a sneaker release as deeply concerning.
“We are fortunate that this incident did not result in more serious injuries to innocent bystanders,” officials stated, adding that this type of activity will not be tolerated and that those responsible will be arrested and prosecuted.
