CENTRE— The Centre Police Department conducted basic handgun and rifle building-clearing training Thursday morning at the city’s former City Hall facility as part of ongoing officer preparedness efforts.

The training was led by Chief Investigator and certified firearms instructor Randy Mayorga. Officers focused on safe firearm handling, tactical movement and building-clearing techniques used in emergency situations, including active threats and high-risk searches.

Department officials said the former City Hall building provided a realistic setting that mirrors environments officers may be called upon to enter while on duty.

“This type of training is essential to ensuring our officers are ready to respond quickly and safely during critical incidents,” said Chief of Police Kirk Blankenship. “Practicing in an actual building environment as a team improves decision-making, communication and coordination between officers.”

According to the department, the training emphasized structured and controlled scenarios designed to reinforce firearm proficiency, tactical response and departmental policies related to use of force, situational awareness and de-escalation.

Officials said regular participation in scenario-based training helps officers respond effectively in dangerous situations, reduce risks to civilians and fellow officers, and make informed decisions under stress.
