BIRMINGHAM – The Cedar Bluff Tigers outlasted Westminster of Oak Mountain 68-67 in overtime Saturday in Class 2A sub-regional basketball action.
The win secured No. 10 Cedar Bluff’s first Northeast Regional appearance in 10 years. The Tigers (20-11) will take on Section at Jacksonville State University’s Pete Mathews Coliseum on Tuesday. Section defeated Susan Moore 84-27 in other sub-regional action on Saturday.
“We really had to fight,” Cedar Bluff coach Johnny Amison said. “It was a very physical game and I think we stepped up to the challenge.
“I told them before the game that we would have to earn our way to Jacksonville and that’s exactly what they did. I’m so proud we ended that (regional) drought.”
Amison also credited the Cedar Bluff fans for making the trip to Birmingham to cheer them on.
“They kept us in it and we are thankful they were there,” he said.
Westminster led through three quarters 50-47. The Tigers’ Zach Jones sank a clutch 3-pointer in the closing seconds of regulation to tie the game at 63 and force overtime. It was Jones’ fourth trey of the game.
