The crash occurred at approximately 7:23 a.m. on Highway 79 at Fred Terry Road, according to Locust Fork Fire and Rescue. Authorities said the wreck involved two other vehicles and left the school bus on its side.
Blount County Schools Superintendent Rodney Green said 26 students were on board the bus at the time of the crash. The students ranged in age, with most attending elementary school. The bus was en route to Locust Fork Elementary School and Locust Fork High School.
Locust Fork Fire and Rescue posted the following regarding the students
Confirming there is a wreck on HWY 79 at Fred Terry Rd involving a school bus that has rolled on it’s side. There are only minor injures. Per Superintendent Green, for all children not transported to the hospital, an additional bus is transporting them to the school for reunification with parents. Parents are asked to go to the school and not the scene. We encourage everyone to avoid the area as the Fire Department treats the injuries and law enforcement investigates the crash. HWY 79 will be closed until that is completed. Please pray for all involved.
Four students were transported to Children’s of Alabama for evaluation of minor injuries as a precaution. Officials said the remaining students who were not injured were transferred to a spare bus and continued to school.
At least one person who was in a vehicle involved in the crash was pronounced dead. Additional details have not yet been released.
