Crews were dispatched at approximately 11:47 a.m. on Feb. 9 to a reported fire at a single-family home located at 1591 Old Rockmart Road, where an individual was believed to be trapped inside.

The department responded with two engine companies, one ladder company, one rescue unit and two chief officers, totaling 18 personnel. Upon arrival, firefighters encountered heavy smoke and flames coming from the one-story residence and immediately began a primary search of the home.

Firefighters successfully rescued one victim during that search and quickly brought the blaze under control. Despite their efforts, an adult male later died from injuries sustained in the fire.

Two additional adults were transported to Atrium Health Floyd for medical treatment. Five residents were displaced as the home sustained significant damage.

The fire was determined to be accidental and cooking-related.

During the incident, a portion of Old Rockmart Road was closed for an extended period between Donahoo Road and Highway 101 while emergency crews worked the scene and conducted the investigation.

The Rome-Floyd Fire Department extended condolences to the family affected by the tragedy.
