Jax State Honors College Hosts Blood Drive Amid National Shortage

Jacksonville-The Jax State Honors College is hosting its annual blood drive Tuesday in the Theron Montgomery Building auditorium from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., with organizers encouraging students, faculty and community members to donate.
The drive is being held in partnership with the American Red Cross and comes as the organization reports a severe blood shortage, with hospital demand currently exceeding available supply.
“Without immediate action, patients face serious risk. Your help is needed right now,” the American Red Cross said.
Participants must be at least 17 years old, meet individual height and weight requirements and be in generally good health. Organizers recommend donors eat a meal and get adequate rest before giving blood. While students can sign up in advance through the American Red Cross website, walk-in donors are also welcome.
Man-Yee Au, a hematology oncology nurse at UAB, said blood donations rely entirely on volunteers.
“Blood can’t be manufactured,” Au said. “It has to come from people who are willing to give.”
The Red Cross is also encouraging donors from a wide range of ethnic backgrounds to help better match patients who require specific blood types.
For first-time donors, the process is straightforward and typically takes less than an hour from start to finish. After donating, participants receive snacks and time to rest before leaving.
In addition to helping replenish hospital supplies, donors will receive a $20 gift card to a merchant of their choice.
Nathan Adams, service committee chairman for the Honors College, said the 2025 drive brought in more than 50 donors. Senior Lilly Preciado said she was initially nervous before donating at a previous drive but now recommends it.
“It’s such a great feeling knowing that just one hour of my time could help save others and give them more time in their life,” Preciado said.
