As Human Trafficking Awareness Month comes to a close, safety officials are urging the public to stay alert at truck stops and rest areas, where traffickers are known to operate.
According to the Alabama Department of Transportation, traffickers frequently use busy travel centers and rest areas along highways to move victims without drawing attention. The United States Department of Transportation says roadways, railways, and other high-traffic areas are often exploited for that reason.

Officials say there are several warning signs to watch for. Victims may have little control over their personal belongings, may not be allowed to speak for themselves, or could show marks indicating control or ownership.
Travelers are advised not to intervene if they suspect trafficking. Instead, note as many details as possible, including vehicle descriptions and tag numbers.
The Alabama Department of Transportation recommends saving the National Human Trafficking Hotline number — 1-888-373-7888 — and calling 911 if someone is in immediate danger.
