National Weather Service Issues Updated Forecast, Expands Winter and Severe Weather Concerns

Birmingham-The National Weather Service in Birmingham has issued an updated forecast highlighting changes to expected weather conditions across Central Alabama, including expanded winter weather advisories and the introduction of a limited severe weather risk.

According to the latest update, Blount, Cherokee, and Etowah counties have been upgraded to a Winter Weather Advisory. Forecasters note that while overall precipitation amounts have decreased, the potential for impactful winter weather remains, particularly in far northwest and northeast portions of Central Alabama.

Meteorologists say some locations may continue to experience fluctuations between wintry precipitation and plain rain, increasing the risk for icing in localized areas. Even small amounts of ice could lead to hazardous travel conditions, especially on bridges, overpasses, and untreated roadways.

In addition to winter weather concerns, the National Weather Service has introduced a Marginal Risk, or Level 1 out of 5, for severe weather across southern portions of the region on Sunday. Forecasters indicate that strong to severe thunderstorms are possible Sunday afternoon, with damaging winds and isolated tornadoes identified as the primary threats.

Very cold temperatures are also expected to follow the system, with forecasters calling for particularly cold conditions Sunday night and Monday night. Officials warn that lingering moisture on roads and walkways could refreeze as temperatures drop, creating a widespread risk for icing across Central Alabama beginning Sunday night.

Residents are urged to remain weather-aware and continue monitoring forecasts as conditions evolve. The National Weather Service advises caution when traveling and encourages the public to stay informed through trusted local media outlets and official weather updates.
