$2M Grant Targets Busy Gadsden Intersection

GADSDEN, Ala.- The City of Gadsden is receiving two million dollars in state grant funding to improve safety at one of its busiest intersections.

Mayor Craig Ford says the State of Alabama notified the city Tuesday that the money will be used to upgrade the intersection of Highway 431 and College Parkway, an area identified as a crash hotspot.

The funding comes through ALDOT’s Alabama Transportation Rehabilitation and Improvement Program, known as ATRIP-Two, which focuses on critical road and bridge needs statewide.

City officials say safety improvements could include lane shifts, changes to shopping center access, and better visibility for drivers.

The city has been studying traffic safety through the federal Safe Streets and Roads for All grant, and the intersection ranked among the top locations for crashes.

Gadsden will provide a local match of three hundred forty-two thousand dollars for the project.

Mayor Ford thanked Governor Kay Ivey, ALDOT Director John Cooper, and the city’s engineering department for helping secure the funding, saying the goal is to make travel through Gadsden safer for everyone.
