NWS Birmingham Shares Winter Weather Safety Tips as Precaution Ahead of Weekend Forecast

The National Weather Service in Birmingham is encouraging Central Alabama residents to begin thinking about winter weather preparedness as a precaution, ahead of a weekend forecast that could include icy conditions in some areas. Forecasters emphasize that it is still too early to determine exact impacts, but some forecast models suggest the potential for ice accumulation, which can affect travel, power lines, and daily routines.

Officials stress that this is not a snow event and does not involve shoveling. Instead, any impacts would most likely come from ice, which can be especially problematic in the region. In addition, colder air is expected to move in behind the system, raising concerns about prolonged cold should power outages occur.

While details on timing, location, and severity remain uncertain, the National Weather Service says early preparation helps reduce risk and allows families to respond more effectively if conditions worsen.

As a precaution, NWS Birmingham shared the following winter weather safety tips, listed in no particular order, to help residents prepare.

Winter Weather Safety Tips for Central Alabama

• Prepare Basic Home Supplies
Have enough non-perishable food, drinking water, and medications for at least three days for everyone in your household. Flashlights, battery banks, and extra blankets should be kept in a central, easily accessible location.

• Plan for Necessary Travel
If travel is unavoidable, carry food, water, a flashlight, phone charger, and heavy jackets or blankets. Begin trips with a full tank of gas or a full charge, and let someone know your route and destination.

• Reduce Tree-Related Risks
Trim dead or weakened trees and limbs that could fall on homes, vehicles, or power lines if ice develops.

• Check on Others
Assist neighbors, elderly residents, and anyone who may have difficulty preparing for or managing through cold weather conditions.

• Practice Heating Safety
Keep all items at least three feet away from space heaters, wood stoves, or propane heaters. Never use ovens or stovetops to heat your home, and remain attentive to fire safety at all times.

• Use Generators Properly
Place generators at least 20 feet from your home to prevent carbon monoxide poisoning. Never operate them indoors or in enclosed spaces.

• Care for Pets
Ensure pets have a warm, safe shelter with reliable access to food and unfrozen water.

• Protect Water Pipes
Insulate exposed pipes and those in unheated areas. Allow faucets to drip slowly during freezing temperatures to help prevent burst pipes.

• Charge Electronics in Advance
Fully charge phones and battery packs ahead of any potential power outages.

• Use Caution on Ice
Avoid icy surfaces when possible. If walking is necessary, take slow, short steps and wear shoes with good rubber traction to reduce the risk of falls.

The National Weather Service will continue to monitor conditions and provide updates as the forecast becomes clearer. Residents are encouraged to stay informed and view these steps as routine preparedness measures rather than an indication of imminent severe weather.
