Seniors across Alabama enrolled in Medicare plans through Blue Cross Blue Shield of Alabama will lose a fitness benefit in the new year.
The benefit helped pay for gym memberships and exercise classes, including programs like Silver Sneakers. Many seniors relied on it for free or discounted workouts focused on strength, balance, and mobility.
YMCA officials say the classes help seniors stay independent as they age.
“These classes help build muscle and improve joint health, which supports a better quality of life,” said Kayla Buckner with the YMCA of Greater Birmingham.
In a statement, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Alabama said it regularly reviews its benefits to remain competitive and financially stable and may adjust or discontinue some offerings.
For seniors who depended on the benefit, the change could mean paying out of pocket to continue classes or stopping altogether.
