Body Found in Advanced Decomposition Inside Chattooga County Home; Investigation Underway

CHATTOOGA COUNTY, Ga. — Authorities have launched a death investigation after deputies discovered a severely decomposed body inside a residence off Highway 100 south of Holland on Monday.
According to the Chattooga County Sheriff’s Office, deputies were dispatched to the home shortly before noon regarding the report of a deceased individual. Sheriff Mark A. Schrader said the body was found in the “latter stages of decomposition,” and preliminary findings indicate the person may have been dead for an extended period of time, possibly more than a year.
Investigators reported no signs of forced entry, and Sheriff Schrader said it appears the individual lived alone. The sheriff emphasized there is no indication of any threat to public safety.
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation was requested to assist, and a GBI crime scene technician and agent responded to process the residence and gather evidence. The GBI confirmed it is assisting in the investigation but said no additional details could be released due to the active status of the case.
The sheriff’s office has begun efforts to identify the deceased and notify next of kin. The body will be transported to the GBI Medical Examiner’s Office for further examination to help determine the cause and manner of death.
“At this point, we do not feel that there is a safety concern for the area residents,” Sheriff Schrader said. “More information will be released at a later time.”
No identifying information about the individual has been made available.
