CENTRE, Ala– The Cherokee County Commission met Monday evening, November 24th, with Chairman Tim Burgess calling the meeting to order at 5 o’clock. Commissioners Randy Jones, Dr. Roger Nichols, Ronnie Shaw, and Carlton Teague were all present.
The session opened with the Pledge of Allegiance, dedicated by Chairman Burgess in honor of Redstone Arsenal as Alabama prepares to welcome the U.S. Space Command headquarters. Commissioner Randy Jones followed with the invocation.
Most routine items, including the agenda and consent agenda, were approved without discussion.
The major highlight of the meeting was a resolution recognizing the accomplishments of the Sand Rock School girls cross-country team. The Lady Wildcats were celebrated for winning eight of their ten meets, capturing both County and Section titles, and earning the Class 2A state runner-up trophy at the AHSAA Championships. Team members and the coach were present for the recognition and a group photo.
In other business, commissioners approved the hiring of Tiffany Wright as a full-time library assistant. The Commission also signed off on a multi-year agreement with the Senior Community Service Employment Program, accepted a $7,500 grant for the county animal shelter, and adopted a resolution to intervene in the Simplified Sellers Use Tax litigation.
Commissioners additionally authorized the chairman to appoint the Personnel Grievance Board and declared a 2018 Ford Explorer from the Sheriff’s Office as surplus for auction.
With no further business and no executive session, the meeting adjourned at 5:13 p.m. The next meeting of the Cherokee County Commission is set for Monday, December 8th at 10 a.m.
