Cherokee County Jury Convicts Centre Man on Drug Charges

CENTRE, Ala– A Cherokee County jury found Jonathan Butler, of Centre, guilty on Wednesday, Nov. 19, 2025, on multiple drug-related charges, including unlawful possession of a controlled substance, unlawful possession of marijuana in the second degree, and possession of drug paraphernalia.

According to the Centre Police Department, the charges stem from an incident on Aug. 31, 2023. Officer Josh Thompson discovered Butler’s vehicle parked behind a closed business at Cherokee Plaza during a routine patrol. After Butler granted consent for a search, officers located narcotics in the driver’s side compartment of the vehicle, resulting in his arrest.

During the trial, prosecutors with the Cherokee County District Attorney’s Office presented body-camera footage, witness testimony, and forensic evidence analyzed by the Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences. After deliberation, the jury returned a guilty verdict on all counts.

Butler now faces a potential prison sentence of up to 10 years.

The Centre Police Department issued a statement thanking the district attorney’s office and forensic experts for their work and support throughout the case.
