The Salvation Army Prepares for Possible SNAP Delays; Expands Food Support Ahead of the Holidays

GADSDEN, AL — The Salvation Army in Etowah County is preparing for an increase in food requests and other needs following the announcement that November SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) benefits may be delayed or not issued. In the past two weeks, we have seen our number of residents needing assistance.

This creates unexpected pressures for families already stretching to make ends meet, and adds demand on local food assistance programs, just ahead of the Thanksgiving and holiday surge.

In response, The Salvation Army is expanding pantry hours, coordinating with local partners, and urging the community to donate shelf-stable food items or make financial contributions to help keep groceries on the table, keep families in their homes, and ensure that children experience the joy of the holidays.

“These are unforeseen circumstances families couldn’t have prepared for,” said Lieutenant Roy Fisher, Commanding Officer of The Salvation Army in Etowah County. “Because of this, we are seeing a rise in needs as individuals, seniors, and families walk through our doors, many for the very first time. Every donation keeps families fed, homes heated and hope alive.”

For160 years, The Salvation Army has shown up when the unexpected happens—after disasters, during job loss, and whenever families face sudden hardship. That experience helps local teams plan, prepare, and serve quickly, so neighbors aren’t left behind.

How to give help

“Our community shows up for each other,” added Lt. Fisher, “We’re counting on that same spirit today.  When you donate now, you’re meeting immediate food needs, giving families peace of mind, and bringing joy at Christmas to children facing a hard season. We need our community’s support to meet this moment with dignity and compassion.”

We can overcome this current crisis as a community, and all that The Salvation Army does is because of your generous heart and support.
