Centre Officials Sworn In as New Administration Begins Term

CENTRE, Ala. — The City of Centre formally launched its new municipal administration Monday evening with the swearing-in of the mayor and city council during an organizational meeting held at City Hall.
Judge Wesley Mobley presided over the ceremony in the absence of Judge Dean Buttram. Mayor Jay Howell took the Oath of Office with his wife, Tonya, holding the Bible. Judge Mobley then administered the oath to all seven council members together.

The business session opened with a prayer led by Pastor Eddie Nation of First Baptist Church of Centre. Mayor Howell then asked the newly seated council whether they wished to continue with the current meeting schedule. Members unanimously agreed, and they also voted not to meet on Veterans Day, expressing appreciation for the service and sacrifice of all veterans.

During the meeting, council members elected the Mayor Pro Tem. An initial open vote indicated Phillip Roberts had secured the position; however, following a request for a recount by Karen Yarbrough Sloupe, City Clerk Sherry Chandler corrected an earlier tabulation error and confirmed Sloupe as the elected Mayor Pro Tem.

Mayor Howell invited each council member to speak, and all expressed gratitude for the support of their families and the community.
The ceremony included Scripture readings and prayers from Pastor Justin Moore of Tates Chapel Baptist Church and Pastor Shane Swafford of the Church of God, adding a reflective and encouraging tone to the proceedings.

The meeting concluded with remarks from Council Member Jimmy Williams, who formally adjourned the session.

With the official start of the new term, city leaders emphasized unity, service, and commitment to the citizens of Centre.
