HUNTSVILLE – Alec Ashley completed 15-of-32 pass attempts for 172 yards and also ran for a pair of first quarter touchdowns, but they weren’t enough to lead the Sand Rock Wildcats past Whitesburg Christian on Thursday. The Wildcats fell 31-14 in the regular football season finale for both teams.
Parker Blair put the Warriors (5-5) up 7-0 in the first quarter on a 7-yard touchdown pass from Greer Lovell before Ashley scored on a pair of 12-yard runs to give the Wildcats (3-7) at 14-7 edge.
Whitesburg Christian tied the game in the second quarter at 14 on a 10-yard run and outscored Sand Rock 17-0 in the second half for the final.
Lovell led the Warriors by completing 8-of-16 pass attempts for 102 yards and two touchdowns.
Both teams play next Friday night in the state playoffs. Class 3A Whitesburg Christian is at Mars Hill, while Class 2A Sand Rock travels to Red Bay.
