BIRMINGHAM – The Cherokee County Lady Warriors won their first volleyball state title in school history Thursday at Bill Harris Arena in Birmingham. They outlasted defending state champion Prattville Christian in five sets. The scores were 22-25, 25-20, 22-25, 25-22 and 15-9.
Nevaeh Gaidurgis led the Lady Warriors (51-9) with 22 kills and eight digs. She earned the 4A state tournament’s Most Valuable Player honor. Jolie Alexander added 15 kills. Ava Haygood posted 11 kills and 14 digs. Ellisan Givens led all players with 30 digs, and Macy Lea dished out 44 assists.
Alexander, Haygood, Givens and Lea joined Gaidurgis on the all-tournament team.
Leah Cate Wilson and Maren Diefenderfer led Prattville Christian (38-12) with 19 kills and 18 kills respectively. Baylee Rogers delivered 45 assists and 21 digs. Morgan Fowler also had 21 digs. Anniston Robison added five kills and 15 digs, and Olivia Rossi finished with nine kills.
Wilson, Diefenderfer and Rogers were all-tournament selections.
