Gas Leak Temporarily Closes Roads in Tate’s Chapel Community
Cherokee County, Ala. — A gas main break in the Tate’s Chapel community Thursday morning prompted a temporary road closure and emergency response from multiple agencies.
According to reports, the incident occurred around 10:15 a.m. near the intersection of Cherokee County Roads 26 and 389 when a gas line was struck. When WEIS Radio arrived on the scene, the strong smell of gas filled the air, and a loud hissing sound could be heard from the point of the leak.
Units from the Centre Fire Department, Cherokee County Emergency Management Agency, the Cherokee County Highway Department, and the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office responded quickly to secure the area. Traffic was blocked in three directions to ensure public safety while crews worked to contain the leak.
Officials with DC Gas arrived shortly afterward and successfully shut off the gas flow, allowing first responders to declare the area safe.
