This week, School Resource Officers from Cherokee County and surrounding counties gathered at the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office Training Center for training. The training provided by NASRO – the National Association of School Resource Officers – focused on mental health. The course, Adolescent Mental Health Training, helps SROs identify and respond to students who have or are suspected of having mental health needs and to develop skills for appropriately responding.

“Mental health is something that has impacted everyone in one way or another,” said Sheriff Jeff Shaver. “I’m proud of the work our SROs do in the schools, and this is just another tool for them to better serve our students and communities. The more our SROs can recognize the symptoms of mental health issues, the quicker they can respond in a positive and appropriate way.”

Sheriff Shaver and Probate Judge Tim Burgess welcomed the attendees to Cherokee County and thanked them for their continued commitment to their communities.

“I’m excited about getting every SRO trained in recognizing and responding to juveniles in a mental health emergency,” said SRO Lieutenant Jordan Kelley. Kelley is also a NASRO Instructor and Board Member. “By giving SROs the proper training to recognize mental health issues, it lessens the likelihood of needing to make an unnecessary arrest.”
