Kenneth Free Appointed as Anniston’s New City Manager
ANNISTON, Ala. — The Anniston City Council has selected Kenneth Free to serve as the city’s next manager, following a unanimous 4-0 vote with one abstention during its October 7, 2025, meeting. Free, an Anniston native, was chosen after a competitive interview process that included three finalists.
Free brings more than two decades of public service experience, including a distinguished 20-year career in the U.S. Army, where he earned the Bronze Star and completed tours in Iraq and Afghanistan. After retiring from the military, he held leadership positions with the U.S. Department of Commerce and the Department of Housing and Urban Development, serving as Alabama’s state director and later as deputy regional administrator for the Southeast.
Throughout his career, Free has focused on accountability, measurable performance, and what he calls “leading from the front.” He said his priorities for Anniston will include expanding access to quality affordable housing, attracting young professionals, and pursuing federal funding opportunities to support local economic growth.
“When I think of affordable housing, it should be quality—something I’d be proud of for my own family to live in,” Free said. “Returning home to Anniston gives me the chance to bring my experiences from across the world back to the community that raised me.”
Mayor Ciara Smith praised the council’s decision, saying Free brings a clear vision and proven leadership to the role. “Mr. Free demonstrated a deep understanding of how to strengthen our community,” said Smith. “His leadership experience and commitment to public service make him well-suited to guide our city. I am eager to work with him as we continue building a strong, united team dedicated to progress.”
Free will officially assume his duties once contract negotiations are complete. Interim City Manager Skyler Bass, who did not seek the permanent position, will return to her role as city clerk following Free’s appointment.
