Sky watchers across Alabama and beyond will be treated to a bright celestial display on Monday, October 6, as the first supermoon of 2025—known as the Harvest Moon—rises in the evening sky.

This year’s Harvest Supermoon is the first of three consecutive supermoons expected before the end of 2025. It earns its traditional name because it is the full moon closest to the autumnal equinox, once providing farmers with extra light to bring in their harvests.

A supermoon occurs when the moon is full and near its closest point to Earth, known as perigee, making it appear larger and brighter than usual. While the difference from an average full moon may be subtle, the sight promises to be an impressive one, especially when viewed near the horizon.

To get the best view, look for the moon as it rises around sunset or sets near sunrise. The “moon illusion” effect—when the moon appears even larger against trees, buildings, or other landmarks—adds to the spectacle.

The Harvest Supermoon will reach full illumination late Monday night, but the moon will appear full for about three days, offering excellent viewing opportunities through Wednesday.

Whether you’re a casual sky watcher or a devoted stargazer, this bright autumn supermoon will be worth a look as it shines over the fall landscape.
