CENTRE – Cherokee County High School senior running back Keyshawn Woods ran for 260 yards on 32 carries and scored three touchdowns to lead the Class 4A, No. 4 Warriors past Class 6A Shades Valley on Friday by the final of 28-13.
Woods opened the scoring for the Warriors (5-1) on a 19-yard touchdown run in the first quarter. Hugh Miller connected on the first of four extra points for a 7-0 lead.
Adam Griffith accounted for the Warriors’ next score on a 65-yard touchdown run in the second quarter. Griffith had three carries for 87 yards and a touchdown. He was also 5-of-10 passing for 31 yards.
The Mounties (1-5) countered later in the second on Christian Dooley’s 42-yard touchdown run. The extra point cut the Warrior lead in half at 14-7.
Woods put the Warriors back up by two scores on a 4-yard touchdown run before halftime. Miller’s point after gave Cherokee County a 21-7 advantage at the half.
After a scoreless third quarter, Shades Valley crept back within a touchdown on a 34-yard scoring pass from Antwan Kelser to Dooley. The score made it a 21-13 Warrior lead.
Kelser completed 12-of-19 pass attempts for 136 yards and a touchdown. Dooley had a pair of catches for 45 yards and a score. He also ran for 55 yards on four carries with a touchdown.
Woods helped put the game away with his third touchdown of the game later in the fourth – a 37-yard run. Miller’s extra point provided the final score.
Cherokee County jumps back into Region 6 play at Anniston on Oct. 3.
